Kurzweil 3000 for Windows Version 8 Patch 8-4

A patch for Kurzweil 3000 for Windows Version 8 is now available
(Patch 8-4).

NOTE: This patch is intended for Kurzweil 3000 Version 8.00, 8.01 or 8.02. After it is installed, the Kurzweil 3000 Version number will change to 8.03.

Changes introduced by Patch 8-4 into Kurzweil 3000 (includes fixes from Patch 8-1, Patch 8-2 and Patch 8-3).

Online Update Instructions:

If you have Internet access, you can retrieve and install this update using the Online Update mechanism in Kurzweil 3000. Just do the following:

1. From within Kurzweil 3000 Version 8, select the Update... menu item from the Online menu on the main menu bar. If it is grayed out, you may need to log in with higher privileges (e.g. as an Administrator).
2. The Online status dialog will indicate that a search is in progress. When it completes, you should select "Kurzweil 3000 8-4" for download and then "OK".
3. When the download completes, you will see a message indicating that the update has been successfully downloaded and that you should exit from Kurzweil 3000 to install it.
4. When you exit from Kurzweil 3000, the update will automatically be installed. The next time you run Kurzweil 3000, the version number will be 8.03 (You can check the version number by going to Help on the main menu bar and selecting About Kurzweil 3000).

Manual Download Instructions:

If you have more than one computer running Kurzweil 3000, and if it is more convenient for you to download the update on only one computer, you can copy the update executable to your other machines and manually run that program. After you have downloaded and installed the update, you can find its executable in the "Patches\Completed Patches" folder under your Kurzweil 3000 folder in the Program Files folder. The name of the executable is k3000patch8-4.exe. Alternately, you can use this link to download it -

1. Make sure that Version 8.00 of Kurzweil 3000 is installed, by checking Help-->About Kurzweil 3000... to see which version you have installed.
2. You may need to log into your computer as Administrator or otherwise assure that you have sufficient permission to update the program files.
3. Make sure that neither Kurzweil 3000 nor Kurzweil 1000 are running.
4. Create an empty folder named "Patches" (if it does not already exist) under the folder Program Files\Kurzweil Educational Systems\Kurzweil 3000\.
5. Download the k3000patch8-4.exe file and place it into that folder.
6. Run the k3000patch8-4.exe file.

Fixes in Patch 8-4:

1. Fixed issue with on-line registration failures when accented characters present.
2. Fixed issue with names of bilingual dictionaries sometimes appearing in Dutch (e.g Engels for English).
3. Fixed issue with Extract from image document causing OCR changes to disappear.
4. Fixed issue with Insert Page Break in a text file not working through Menus or Command (Ctrl+Enter)
5. Fixed issue with Bookmarks occasionally misordered.
6. Resolved Landscape printing issues.
7. Resolved issue when opening a PDF with Acrobat 7.0 installed.

Fixes in Patch 8-3 (included in current patch):

1. Fixed the issue when changing to the Classic toolbar set via the right mouse button in toolbar. Upon exiting and restarting, the change was lost.
2. Fixed cases where unwanted files were left in user's TEMP folder.
3. Fixed skew in page when using Canon 3080C scanner with dynamic thresholding.
4. Fixed problem where periods in user names can cause problems.
5. Added a new feature in ScanConf: select a device, and check "Ignore this Scanner". This feature helps to avoid devices such as digital cameras that may appear as a Scanner.
6. Added support for Encarta 2005 Deluxe.
7. Fixed issue where if a user selects the "I forgot my account" option during registration, no request was ever sent to the server to e-mail the user account information to the e-mail address on file.
8. Restricted users may now create network accounts, if the server option allows it.
9. Changing the current page while doing Edit Underlying Text is now prevented.
10. Fixed problem where new Pronunciations sometimes would get lost.
11. Fixed problem where Pronunciation tool did not select the proper language.
12. Added hidden option to suppress username list at logon time. Contact Kurzweil Educational Systems technical support for more information.
13. Fixed problem where certain character combinations (of punctuation for example) caused Edit Underlying Text display to appear blank.
14. Added better caption about online reference site passwords.
15. Some registration failure messages were improved.
16. Fixed problems with Spell Check in multi-line text notes.
17. Online Books feature now handles Gutenberg site better.

Fixes in Patches 8-1 and 8-2 (included in current patch):

1. Quality has been improved for color images that are newly scanned, opened from TIF files or converted via the Virtual Printer.
2. MP3 files were sometimes created in place of WAV files by audio spooler.
3. Magnify Spoken Word works properly with color image files.
4. If user only changes the capitalization of a word in Edit Underlying Text, the change is lost.
5. Failure when trying to find vocabulary word at end of document.
6. Failure when spell checking empty image document.
7. Insert key in text file fails.
8. Last portion of secondary text is not read.
9. Problems in Note Move or Resize mode.
10. Errors after using CTRL-ALT-R.
11. Missing help files.
12. Names used for scanners in the selection list are more descriptive.
