Kurzweil 3000 Version 9 Patches and Updates
Kurzweil 3000 for Windows Version 9 Patch 9.4 February 2, 2006
A patch for Kurzweil 3000 for Windows Version 9 is now available (Patch 9.4).
NOTE: This patch is intended for Kurzweil 3000 Versions 9.00, 9.01, 9.02 and 9.03. After it is installed, the Kurzweil 3000 Version number will change to 9.04.
If you are using the Read the Web feature with the Firefox browser, after installing this patch the KESIReader extension should be uninstalled from Firefox and then re-installed. The new version for KESIReader is Version 1.3.
Online Update Instructions:
If you have Internet access, you can retrieve and install this update using the Online Update mechanism in Kurzweil 3000. Just do the following:
- From within Kurzweil 3000 Version 9, select the Updates... menu item from the Online menu on the main menu bar. If it is grayed out, you may need to log in with higher privileges (e.g. as an Administrator).
- The Online status dialog will indicate that a search is in progress. When it completes, you should select "Kurzweil 3000 9.4" for download and then "OK".
- When the download completes, you will see a message indicating that the update has been successfully downloaded and that you should exit from Kurzweil 3000 to install it.
- When you exit from Kurzweil 3000, the update will automatically be installed. The next time you run Kurzweil 3000, the version number will be 9.04. (You can check the version number by going to Help on the main menu bar and selecting About Kurzweil 3000).
Manual Download Instructions:
If you have more than one computer running Kurzweil 3000, and if it is more convenient for you to download the update on only one computer, you can copy the update executable to your other machines and manually run that program. After you have downloaded and installed the update, you can find its executable in the "Patches\Completed Patches" folder under your Kurzweil 3000 folder in the Program Files folder. The name of the executable is k3000patch9.4.exe. Alternately, you can use this link to download it - Download Patch 9.4 for Kurzweil 3000 - Version 9 (4.09 MB)
- Make sure that Version 9.0, 9.01, 9.02 or 9.03 of Kurzweil 3000 is installed, by checking Help-About Kurzweil 3000... to see which version you have installed.
- You may need to log into your computer as Administrator or otherwise assure that you have sufficient permission to update the program files.
- Make sure that neither Kurzweil 3000 nor Kurzweil 1000 are running.
- Create an empty folder named "Patches" (if it does not already exist) under the folder Program Files\Kurzweil Educational Systems\Kurzweil 3000\.
- Download the k3000patch9.4.exe file and place it into that folder.
- Run the k3000patch9.4.exe file.

Version 9 Documentation Note:
White on Black Scanning option: The Kurzweil 3000 product documentation cites this as an option under Extras. However, as of Version 9, Kurzweil 3000 does this automatically for ScanSoft and FineReader. The option is only shown if Expervision OCR is installed, which may be the case if Kurzweil 3000 Version 8 or earlier was never uninstalled.

Changes introduced by Patch 9.3 into Kurzweil 3000 (also includes changes from Patch 9.2 and Patch 9.1 as described below):
- After installing Patch 9.2, displayed words can temporarily disappear while using Edit Underlying Text.
- Lookups in Britannica would fail, because of changes on the Britannica web site.
Changes introduced by Patch 9.2 into Kurzweil 3000:
- Added support for Firefox 1.5 (KESIReader 1.1).
- Added support for accessing the Miriam-Webster Medical Dictionary when using the Online Reference Lookup feature.
- Added support for the Kodak i40 scanner.
- Added a “Save As” requirement when saving a backup file.
- Fixed issue if there is no number entered when using the Move Existing Page feature.
- Fixed issue with no error message appearing if Save Page Range
- Fixed issues with Edit Underlying Text in files with front-matter pages.
- Fixed issue with Read the Web using Firefox when it sometimes fails to highlight text if there are multiple frames. KESIReader extension should be uninstalled within Firefox browser and then re-installed.

- Fixed issue with repeatedly recognizing the first page when opening a multi-page TIFF file with the "Show New Scans" option disabled.

- Added support for Encarta 2006 (standard version only).
- Added double-click option on Online Reference Lookup and Online Reference History lists.
- Fixed issue when viewing a user dictionary of more than 255 words.
- Added a confirmation dialog to avoid accidentally invoking Reset Page in Zone Editor..
- Fixed issue when ScanSoft OCR fails on a very tall image and does not give an error message.
- Fixed issue when reading note "in place" that is sometimes read in wrong order when columns are present.
