Kurzweil Educational Systems Introduces Kurzweil 1000 Version 8 With Powerful New Reading and Portability Features

New Version Expands Synthetic Speech Options, Search and Portability Capabilities for Individuals With Visual Impairments.

Kurzweil Educational Systems®, Inc., innovator of reading technology for individuals with visual or learning disabilities, today announced Kurzweil 1000� Version 8, the premier reading software for people who are blind or visually impaired. The latest version contains many significant new features, including new natural sounding text to speech voices; enhanced ways to access local files; online magazine search and retrieval capability; and additional support for transferring documents to portable devices.

  • High Quality Voices from VoiceText Two new voices (one female, one male) offer natural sounding voice options to make reading easier to customize and comprehend.
  • Expanded Online Research and File Retrieval Search for magazines as well as books from various online repositories; use new and simplified ways to search and retrieve local documents; browse and download books via online bookshelves.
  • Added Portability Capabilities Make it easier for users to listen to electronic text and voice files while on the go. Kurzweil 1000 has added support for BookCourier and PAC Mate� portable devices.
  • Verbosity Gives the user the ability to adjust system event alarms and reports with voices or sounds. For instance, users can customize the text spoken at startup or exit; or select an audio tone of choice when moving to the next page when reading continuously.
  • Enhanced Language Tools Facilitate independent communication with the updated American Heritage Dictionary and Roget's Thesaurus. Definitions are more thorough and easier to access. Users can look up multi-word phrases and also use wildcard characters when not certain of the spelling.
  • Color Scanning Allows scanning of a wider variety of documents with images and preserves the color information in saved image files, making it easier for low vision users to read.
  • Scanning Optimization Provides powerful scanning optimization enhancements for settings such as thresholding, brightness, resolution, and speckle removal; also provides an easy way to obtain better recognition results.
  • Full-Function Talking Scientific Calculator Empowers users with a full-function talking scientific calculator to work with numerical data and complements Kurzweil 1000's myriad options to access text-based data.
  • Discount on Annual Subscription to Bookshare.org Entitles Kurzweil 1000 Version 8 users to $25 off the $75 first year cost (annual $50 subscription to Bookshare.org plus $25 sign up) of a new Bookshare.org subscription. Bookshare.org is the online community that allows people with visual disabilities to legally download over 10,000 copyrighted books in accessible formats.
  • Discount on BookCourier Entitles Kurzweil 1000 Version 8 users to $40 off the regular cost ($379) of BookCourier, a handheld device from Springer Design for listening to electronic text, voice files and music.

Pricing and Availability

Kurzweil 1000 Version 8 retails for $995 and is available immediately. Through December 15, 2003, Kurzweil Educational Systems is offering a discount of $100 off the cost of any new full product purchase of Kurzweil 1000 Version 8. This discount cannot be combined with any other offer or discount.

Customers of Kurzweil 1000 are eligible for free upgrades for one year from the original date of product purchase. For customers who purchased the product more than one year ago, upgrades are $95.
