Error 1721 Occurs During Installation

This article applies to:

  • Kurzweil 1000

  • Kurzweil 3000 for Windows

Symptoms

During installation, you get the following error: "Error 1721.There is a problem with this Windows Installer package. A program required for this install to complete could not be run. Contact your support personnel or package vendor."

Cause

The cause can vary depending on the operating system and version of the Kurzweil application you are installing.

If you are installing Kurzweil 1000 or Kurzweil 3000 on Windows XP or Windows 2000, this problem may be caused if the KESI Virtual Printer fails to install.

If you are installing Kurzweil 3000, version 6.0 on Windows 2000, the install program runs an application, APThunk.exe designed for the old 16 bit Windows 3.1. Certain versions of Windows 2000 tightened security on Windows 3.1 applications, such that APThunk.exe will not run. This problem does not appear on Windows XP.

Solution

If you are installing Kurzweil 1000 or Kurzweil 3000 version 7 or above, on Windows XP or Windows 2000:

First, make sure that you have clicked on the OK button on the 1721 and the “Roll Back” has finished.

Go to the Control Panel and then to Printers and Faxes. Select Add a new printer. When the Add Printer Wizard asks for Local or Network Printer, select "Local printer attatched to this computer". Uncheck the "Automatically detect and install my Plug and Play printer" check box. Click Next.

In the Select a Printer Port dialog, use the default of LPT1 and click Next.

In the Install Printer Software dialog, click the button “Have Disk”. Then browse to the Kurzweil CD's KESIPrint/2000 directory. Choose the KESIVP.inf file and click Open. Then finish the install of the virtual printer.

Once the virtual printer is installed, try installing the Kurzweil 3000 again. It should complete without the 1721 error.
