Hang When Opening Image Files

This article applies to:

  • Kurzweil 3000 for Windows, all versions

Summary

Kurzweil 3000 for Windows may hang when opening a TIFF or BMP file and never display the image.

Symptoms

Kurzweil 3000 may hang when you ask it to open a TIFF or BMP file, but may open a KESI file correctly. To determine if you have this problem, open a KESI file containing an image, try to rotate a page, and see if Kurzweil 3000 hangs.

Cause

The problem is caused when Kurzweil 3000 tries to create a temporary file on your hard disk drive but is unable to. This could be caused by a full hard drive, a lack of permissions to write to the "temp" folder on your hard disk drive, or the setting of the "Read Only" attribute on your "temp" folder.

Solution

The solution to this problem depends on which of the causes (listed above) is responsible. First, make sure you have adequate space available on your hard disk drive. Then make sure your temporary folder (typically in "C:\Documents and Settings\<username>\Local Settings\Temp", where <username> is the name you use to log on to Windows) does not have its Read Only attribute set. Finally, make sure your user account has permissions to access your "temp" folder. Consult your Microsoft Windows documentation or see your System Administrator for help in checking these items.

Status

Kurzweil 3000 needs access to the "temp" folder on your hard drive, and it needs adequate available space to write out temporary files while it is working.
