Language for the Reading Voice is Incorrect
This article applies to:
Symptoms
Sometimes, particularly with short pages, the reading voice changes
automatically, and begins reading the page with a voice that is clearly
designed for a different language.
Cause
The Kurzweil 1000 attempts to automatically detect which language is
being read. Usually it does this once per page, although it can be
instructed to do it once per paragraph. If the speech engines on your
computer can read in multiple languages, the Kurzweil 1000 may change
the reading voice to choose one that it decides is more appropriate for
the text you are reading. It sometimes makes the wrong choice,
particularly when the amount of text on a page or in a paragraph is
relatively small.
Solution
Language Identification can be a useful feature if you regularly
switch between one language and another while you are reading. If you do
not, you can disable language identification. To do so, press the ALT
key, then “T”, and then “R” to open the Reading Settings dialog. Press
the ALT key and “L”, or down arrow to the Language Identification
setting. Then press down arrow until you hear the word “Disabled”. Press
enter to accept the change. If you wish, save your settings over the
default settings file. If you have multiple settings files and wish to
alter all of them, you may wish to save partial settings, selecting the
reading settings as the category to be saved, and then tabbing into the
list of settings files and pressing Control plus “A” to select all of
them.
