Kurzweil 3000 KES File Compatibility

Summary

Kurzweil 3000 software writes out scanned documents as "KES files" that have an extension .kes. In general, KES files are portable between all versions of the software, but there are some cases where color information may be lost or updated software will be needed. The following table summarizes these cases.

Find the row with the "From" version of the software and then find the column with the "To" version. An "yes" means that KES files are compatible. Numbers in parentheses refer to the notes below.

Notes:

(1) Patch 7-5 (or 7-4) must be installed in order for color files to work. See http://kurzweiledu.com/downloads_k3000win_updates_ver7.aspx.

(2) KES files with color will open as Black and White.

General Note

Compatibility of features such as footnotes, sticky notes, voice notes, bookmarks, highlighting etc. are not covered in the above table. In general, if you open a KES file with a version of the Kurzweil 3000 that predates one of these features, the information is simply discarded. If you then edit the file, save it, and go back to the newer version, the features may or may not be preserved. (The quickest way to tell for sure it to try it!)

Compatibility between Kurzweil 3000 and Kurzweil 1000

When KES files are transferred between Kurzweil 1000 and Kurzweil 3000, in either direction, the basic text of the document is preserved. In some cases, bookmarks may still work. Other features such as notes, highlighting, print and copy locking are not preserved. Encryption of files will remain secure, but it may not be possible to open the encrypted file using the software that did not create it.

Iimages will usually work when going from Kurzweil 1000 to Kurzweil 3000. In fact, if images are present in a Kurzweil 1000 document, those images will force an automatic rerecognition of the text in the Kurzweil 3000. In that case preservation of the possibly edited text does not happen. A Kurzweil 1000 can usually handle the images in a Kurzweil 3000 Version 7 or later KES file.
