Error Sending Large Color Files to Virtual Printer

This article applies to:

  • Kurzweil 1000

  • Kurzweil 3000 for Windows

Summary

When trying to send a large number of pages (especially color) to Kurzweil 3000 using Virtual Printer, the process may fail. When this happens Virtual Printer appears to print all the pages, Kurzweil 3000 launches, and displays an error message. The error message may say "It is strongly recommended to use 1-bit B/W images. This image appears to be 0-bit.", or simply "There was an error loading the requested item". Kurzweil 3000 then displays a blank page and no further processing takes place.

Symptoms

If you try to send a large number of color pages (roughly 100 or more) to Virtual Printer and receive one of the above error messages, you are encountering this problem.

Cause

The problem arises as a result of the size of the file created by Virtual Printer. It is not a specific number of pages that causes the problem, but rather the actual size of the resulting file.

Solution

Try sending smaller pieces of the document to Virtual Printer one at a time until you have the document in several .KES files. It is normally recommended to keep your .KES files to around 50 pages, especially when dealing with color files.

Status

This is a known issue in all current versions of Kurzweil 1000 and Kurzweil 3000 for Windows.
