Using Windows Update with Kurzweil 3000 Server
This article applies to:
-
Kurzweil 3000 for Windows, Network Edition, version 6, 7,
and 8
Summary
When using Windows Update on a machine running Kurzweil 3000
Server, there is a risk of losing some or all of your installed
Kurzweil 3000 Floating Licenses.
Symptoms
If your licenses mysteriously disappear from Kurzweil 3000
Server, you may have this problem, especially if you're using the
Windows "Auto Update" feature.
Cause
Certain Windows software updates may cause the licenses
installed on your system to be removed or corrupted. If Kurzweil 3000
Server detects any changes to the installed licenses, it will assume
they have been tampered with and not allow them to be used.
Solution
Before installing any Windows patches or updates, you should
always uninstall any installed Network Licenses back to the key disks
they came on. Then install the patches, reboot your system, and
reinstall your Network Licenses from the key disks. The same procedure
should be followed when reinstalling or upgrading the version of
Windows installed on the server machine. You should always disable the
"Auto Update" feature of Windows, as this may automatically download
and install an update to the operating system that renders your
licenses unusable.
Status
This is a consequence of the way Kurzweil
3000 Floating Licenses were designed. Whenever performing maintenance
on your server machine, it is highly recommended to uninstall your
licenses first, do the maintenance, then reinstall your licenses.
This problem has been fixed in versions 9 and later.
