Kurzweil 1000 Version 13.02 Release Notes November 1, 2012 Release 13.02 includes the following new features: (1) PDF Output. If you have Microsoft Word 2007 or 2010 on your system, then you can save a file as PDF within Kurzweil 1000. Use File->Save As, and select "Other" as the format. After you press return, that will bring up a list formats. Select "PDF". You can then save the file as PDF. Once you have done this, you'll find that PDF is in your list of possible format choices from then on. Note that the original version of Word 2007 did not have PDF output in it, but later versions, and automatic updates of that program, did. (2) Extending a Magnification Shortcut. Control+Plus and Control+Minus have been a zoom in and zoom out shortcut for some time when images are being shown. It was suggested that we do the same thing in when text was being shown, magnifying the fonts in a manner similar to that used in the Display Settings dialog. (3) Scanner Brightness setting may be disabled. If a device does not support a brightness setting, that setting may be disabled in the scanner settings dialog. Note, though, that it will be disabled only once the scanning device is initialized, so it is quite possible that the setting will be enabled until one tabs through the various settings through the scanner source setting. We don't automatically initialize a scanning device until the user has tabbed through that setting, because there are circumstances where a bad scanning choice will throw an error in a TWAIN device that we cannot readily prevent. (4) Dictionary Entry may be spoken with a voice in the wrong language (7710). If a bilingual dictionary had been used in the dictionary dialog, and then was changed to a default English dictionary, the word and its definition might still have been spoken in the language that was appropriate for the bilingual dictionary, rather than in English. (5) Search Again causes Silent Dialog (7725). If the "Search Again" button is activated in the online status dialog, or if it is cancelled quickly, the previous dialog, either Search for Books or Search for Magazines, will be brought up again. Unfortunately, the form did not speak until the user did something. That has been fixed. (6) Misspelled word remains as word to be looked up in a dictionary (7726). If you type an incorrect word in the dictionary and press Enter to define it, the K1000 displays a dialog, suggesting the correct spelling of that word. If you select "Yes" to define the corrected word, the word gets looked up but the first word which was incorrectly spelled and typed still remained in the "Word to be defined" control. This has been fixed. (7) Allow for a Change to Scanner Source before Initializing Scanner (7728). It is always dangerous to initialize a scanner, and important to give a user the opportunity to choose the scanner source before doing so. Consequently, scanner settings that depend on an initialized scanner should follow, not precede, the scanner source setting. For that reason, the resolution setting was moved immediately after the scanner source setting. (8) Short Cut Keys don't work properly in the font format dialog (7780). The short cut for font size and underlining didn't work properly. This has been fixed. (9) Many of the format choices in KOCRUtil for the ScanSoft OCR Engine fail (7493) Under most circumstances, if one of the formats XML, Utext, UFormatted TXT, Ucsu, TextwithLinebreaks, Text, Rtff2000Sword, Pptx, Infopth, Formatted TXT, and CSV is chosen when the ScanSoft engine is being used, the recognition and conversion attempt will fail. This has been fixed. The names for these various format changes have been altered as well, to make them more understandable. (10) Problems reading or writing EPUB (7904, 8009, 8012, 8061, 8062, 8935, 8936) EPUB is new to us, and there are many different flavors of EPUB documents. Most of these problems were EPUB documents that would not open, or that would display, but with certain characters, bookmarks, or pages misinterpreted. (11) The XML Format of KOCRUtil did not work. (7852) If XML was specified as the output format for KOCRUtil, it would fail with an error indicating that the requested functionality was not allowed by this ABBYY FineReader Engine license. That format has been removed. (12) The Alto Format of KOCRUtil did not work. (7853) The requested functionality for the Alto format was not available in KOCRUtil. This format has been removed. (13) Block Indents don't unindent for HTML, EPUB, or DAISY. (8006) When a paragraph is block indented, the text that follows it was also displayed as though it were block indented. This has been fixed. (14) Pressing Enter in the Dictionary Dialog. (8131) In previous versions of Kurzweil 1000, pressing enter when keyboard focus was in the definition entry text box in the dictionary dialog would behave the same as page down, or as activating the next button - if there was another entry, it would be displayed and read. That was lost when this dialog was reworked as a part of version 13. It has been restored. (15) A modest speed improvement in Go To Bookmark. When one activates a bookmark, we were always reloading the current page. Now we first check to see if we are already at that page. Particularly for some poorly formatted EPUB and DAISY documents, that can speed things up, as the page might be enormous. (16) Non-Interactive use of KOCRUtil. (8414). In general, of you run KOCRUtil from Windows Explorer and choose not to run it interactively, it should go off and do what it was told to do quietly. If, however, its default was to use ScanSoft as an OCR engine, it would post a message indicating how long it took after it completed processing for any image. That has been fixed. (17) Audio Devices are not properly restored when settings are loaded. (8474) If your computer supports multiple audio devices, Kurzweil 1000 allows you to specify, in the voice settings dialog, which device should be used for the reading and the message voice. Unfortunately, if you changed them from the default, saved settings, and later came back into Kurzweil 1000, those devices were not being respected properly. They are now. (18) DAISY Output. When one wrote a DAISY document using Kurzweil 1000, the standard that was being used was quite old. That has been upgraded, such that the DAISY format now written is at least close to the current standard. Note that both the old and the new format can be read by Kurzweil 1000. (19) Office Add-In was Broken. For a number of years, one could use the scanning and recognition facilities that are a part of Kurzweil 1000 from within Microsoft Office. Unfortunately, that was broken in version 13. It is now fixed. Please note that it cannot support most cameras right now, just scanners. (20) TWAIN vs. Native SCEYE Interface. We have written a native interface for the SCEye family of document cameras, in part to support a preview mode for that device. If, however, a user selects a TWAIN interface, as provided by the manufacturers of this device, K1000 was prone to crashing, as it assumed that it owned the device once it received an event or two from it. That has been fixed. (21) The voice device wasn't always updated properly. If a voice was changed because of a language change, even in the voice settings dialog, the audio device associated with that voice wasn't always properly updated. This has been fixed. (22) SCEYE camera fixes. With the help of an engineer in Belgium, we are debugging problems in our support of the SCEYE camera. It didn't work at all, due to a few components that were missing from the original install. Next, it didn't scan after preview was used. (23) Message Voice Role wasn't fully updating the Voice Settings Dialog. (8595) When one changed the role in the first control in the voice settings dialog, the rest of the dialog settings should change - including the voice name, and possibly the engine name. In addition, the emphasis voice and pitch settings, as well as the language setting, should be disabled. Switching back to the reading voice, should, of course, reverse all of this. (24) Reverse Braille Translation was failing In some circumstances, reverse Braille translation was failing. This has been fixed. (25) Message Role of Voice Settings Dialog may Show the Wrong Settings. (8686) If you use the same voice for both messages and reading, the voice settings dialog would not switch appropriately when you changed from the reading to the message role. The emphasis options should have been disabled, and items such as the pitch, if different, should also have changed. This has been fixed. (26) Very slow open of RTF files. (8684) If one changed the split long pages setting in the conversion settings dialog for opening RTF files and then tried to open a lengthy RTF file, it would open very slowly, and might well have been unresponsive in other ways while opening. This has been fixed. (27) KOCRUtil incorrectly reports that it is not registered. (8687) Customers with version 13 could use KOCRUTil for one month, at one point it would indicate that the product was not registered. This has been fixed.
