I. CHANGES FOR PATCHES
I.A. Patch 11.05
- Kurzweil 3000 not opening PDF files directly.
This has been fixed.
-
Standalone file sharing of KES files not applying assigned privileges.
When saving a .kes file type to a shared folder that has specific
rights assigned, the rights were not applying.
This has been fixed.
- The CD for Kurzweil 3000 Windows Standalone Version 11.03
12/18/2009 does not contain a folder with the 64-bit taskbar
installer. If you need it for 11.04 or 11.05, it is
downloadable from:
http://www.kurzweiledu.com/downloads_k3000win_updates_ver11.aspx
- The KESIReader.xpi for Read the Web has been updated with the newest version of Firefox.
- Edit Underlying Text fixed.
Edit Underlying Text was replacing some (or even all)
of the words on the page with empty strings.
- Override OCR fixed.
Another symptom of the Edit Underlying Text bug was that
Override OCR was not reading text in Zones aloud.
I.B. Patch 11.04
- A Menu Item for Split Screen View.
There is now a menu item for Split Screen view in the writing menu.
-
Apostrophes and the Zone Editor.
Apostrophes were being stripped out when entered using OCR
override in the Zone Editor. This has been fixed.
- Keyboard Shortcut for Quick Takes in the Brainstormer.
The assigned keyboard shortcut for Quick Takes in the Brainstormer
was Control+P, which, of course, is the shortcut for printing.
We have changed that shortcut to Control+Shift+Q.
- Unable to download large books from Bookshare.org.
Sometimes Bookshare.org takes long enough to prepare a book that
a time out is triggered. We have increased the time out significantly
to reduce this problem.
- Pausing at Empty Notes.
In some circumstances, the feature to pause reading at empty notes
was failing to pause. This has been fixed.
- Extracting Many Types of Notes.
If you attempted to extract bubble notes along with either text
or sticky notes, the latter two would not necessarily be extracted
properly. This has been fixed.
- Page Corruption.
Certain rare cases where a page could become unreadable after
the insertion of a note have been fixed.
- Saving a File in Word 2007 DOCX format.
If you saved a document as docx, you would not be able to open
it in MS Word 2007, unless you renamed the extension to .doc.
This has been fixed.
- Collation of Double Sided Scans.
If you attempted to collate a double sided scan, Kurzweil 3000
would crash. This has been fixed.
- Color PDF Files.
Attempts to recognize certain Color PDF files using File Open,
or the K3Automater, would cause a crash. The work around was
to use the Virtual Printer instead. For the most part,
these problems occur when the resolution of the color images
in the PDF file are high - 600 DPI or above. The problem was,
unfortunately, difficult to reproduce consistently. We have
identified and fixed at least a few of the causes of this crash.
- Changing Feature Locks in a Network Client.
If you locked certain features from the network administrator,
the client could unlock some of them. This has been fixed.
- Highlighting in an RTF Document.
If you highlighted an RTF document in Kurzweil 3000 using
several different colors, and then read the document,
highlighting colors would change inappropriately.
This has been fixed.
- The Ruler and Split View.
When "Show Ruler" is checked, and when we are in a split view,
part of the ruler could be seen behind the vertical separator.
This has been fixed.
- Copy Protected KES Files and Text Notes.
If you opened a copy protected KES file in Kurzweil 3000,
it was impossible to type the letter 'x' in any text note,
sticky note, or underlying text. This has been fixed.
- Display Error for Bubble Note Editing.
If an attempt was made to edit an existing bubble note,
and if that bubble note was a True/False or a Multiple Choice
note, the initial display would not show the last choice.
This has been fixed.
- Following Hyperlinks in Encyclopedia Articles.
In some circumstances, following hyperlinks from one article
to another in an online encyclopedia could cause a crash.
This has been fixed.
- Looking Up Information in "Bartlett's, Columbia,
Simpson's, and Respectfully Quoted Quotations".
If a search string was not found, searching through the
above site in the Online Reference Lookup tool would
generate a rather technical message in a message box.
That message box has been suppressed.
- File->Save did not work for PDF files.
If you opened a PDF file within Kurzweil 3000 and, after
recognition completed, tried to use File->Save, you would be
told that there was an error saving the requested item.
File->Save As, however, did work. Now File->Save will work
in the same manner as File->Save As for a PDF document.
- Moving to the Previous Word in Edit Underlying Text.
F9 can be used to move backwards word by word, and F10 forwards,
when you are using Edit Underling Text. F9, however, would not
cross a paragraph boundary, while F10 would. F9 can now cross
from one paragraph to another.
- Moving to the Next Word in Edit Underlying Text.
F10 can be used to move forwards in Edit Underlying Text.
However, it would skip over single character words.
This has been fixed.
- Secondary Text Zones and Self Paced Reading.
If a document had multiple secondary text zones, they were
read one after another, even when the reading mode was set
to "Self-Paced". This has been fixed.
- Stopping at a Secondary Text Zone.
In some circumstances, continuous reading did not stop properly
at the end of the last primary text zone, but would continue
into the first secondary text zone. This has been fixed.
- Keyboard Navigation in the Spelling or Syllables Dialog.
Tab and Shift Tab did not work properly in these dialogs to move
from one control to another. This has been fixed.
- Editing Operations within the Pronunciation Key Control.
In the Syllables Dialog, it was possible to edit the text displayed
in the pronunciation key, although it was impossible to save it.
That text is read only, and editing should not have been permitted.
This has been fixed.
- Bubble Note font size is inconsistent.
If you chose the large size in the appearance section of
the bubble notes dialog, the multiple choice or true/false region
of the resulting note would be larger, but the title and question
would be in the normal font size. Now all regions of the bubble note
are written with a larger font.
- Zoom and DAISY documents.
The Zoom field did not work properly for DAISY documents.
This has been fixed.
- Footnotes overwriting each other.
In some circumstances, adding a new footnote in a document that
already contained footnotes would overwrite the content of one
of the existing footnotes. This has been fixed.
- Extracting Highlights to Column Notes.
Extracting Highlights to Column Notes did not always produce
reliable results, and could sometimes hang. This was particularly
the case with multi-page text documents, such as those produced
when one opens a Kurzweil 1000 document or a DAISY document.
This has been fixed.
- K3Automater.
On some systems, K3Automater would hang. This has been fixed.
I.C. PATCH 11.01
- Hyperlinks in Bubble Notes.
If you create or modify a bubble note, you'll find a new check
box labeled "hyperlink" in the upper right corner of the bubble
note dialog. If you check this box and enter a URL in the text
box that normally contains the one line title or prompt for the
bubble note, you will have created a new type of bubble note
which allows a reader to bring up a web browser that shows the
web page referenced by the URL - just double click on the
bubble note. This type of bubble note shows a red at sign ("@")
in image documents. This kind of bubble note is ignored
when one extracts notes.
-
Creation of Audio Files.
Kurzweil 3000 has always relied on the presence of an MP3 encoder
in order to create audio files in that format. It now can provide
one, for those whose computers do not already have one. This
feature is available when you click OK on the Create MP3 Dialog
and the system could not find a MP3 encoder. Note that you must
have Internet access in order to successfully activate this feature.
Alternatively, you can use the "Get MP3 Encoder" button in the bottom
left corner of the Create Audio File dialog. It is enabled only
if an MP3 encoder cannot be found. In rare circumstances, it might
be necessary to get the encoder even when the system determines
that you already have an MP3 encoder. In this case, you'll find
a new diagnostic called "MP3Encoder.exe" which will permit you to
get the MP3 Encoder even when Kurzweil 3000 determines that you
already have one.
- Enhanced Support for DAISY Documents.
The bookmarks in DAISY documents have levels, where each level
indicates a particular position in the hierarchy of a document.
One level, for example, can be used for Chapters, and a second
for subchapters. When a DAISY document is opened, the levels
of the bookmarks are now shown in the bookmark dialog. Further,
if a DAISY document contained images, those images will be shown
when the document is opened.
- Edit Bubble Note Toolbar Button.
The toolbar button for editing bubble notes did not work.
It does now.
- Spell Checking a Document.
When the interactive spell checker was first invoked, it would
ignore the first letter of the first word, often incorrectly
indicating a misspelling. This has been fixed.
- Printing Images.
We found two separate ways in which the printing of an image
document could crash. Both have been fixed.
- Word Lists.
Word lists can now contain phrases as well as single words.
- Extraction of Highlights.
When highlights are extracted into a text document, the color
of the highlighted word was sometimes inappropriately continued
into additional extracted text. This has been fixed.
- Edit Underlying Text.
A problem was found where a recognition result, corrected in
edit underlying text, would be read in the wrong order.
This has been fixed.
- Missing Help.
Several context specific help entries were missing.
This has been fixed.
- Lock Features Dialog.
Many of the options in the Lock Features dialog were disabled
for restricted users. This was no longer appropriate for
version 11 due to changes made for Vista. Those features
are now available, even for restricted users.
- Highlighting while Reading.
If the reading voice was not the same as the voice being
used to speak menus and buttons, highlighting of text as
it is being read could be thrown off by the use of the
other voice. This has been fixed.
- File Join
The Join feature was not working when two KES files were
specified. This has been fixed.
- Move Existing Page.
The Move Existing Page dialog did not work. It has been fixed.
- Repetitive Dialog when Scanning Two Sided Pages.
The dialog that indicates that you should turn over your
document to continue scanning could pop up repeatedly.
This has been fixed.
- Deletion of a Pronunciation.
Deletion of a pronunciation change would, in some circumstances,
cause a crash in the pronunciation dialog. This has been fixed.
- Disappearing Palettes.
The Brainstorm and Outliner palettes can be moved around the
screen, and, in some circumstances, off the screen. We now
limit the movement so that a piece of the palette will always
be visible.
- Canceling from File->Exit.
If a file has not been saved when one chooses to exit from the
product, a dialog box provides an opportunity to cancel the
operation. Unfortunately, the cursor stayed as an hourglass
after the cancellation. That has been fixed.
- How to Videos
The "How to Videos" menu item had been removed from the
help menu for network clients in version 11, as those videos
no longer fit on the product CD. They are, however, available
on the web, and the menu item has been returned - it now brings
up a web browser pointing to the appropriate page on the web.
- Toolbar Settings and Remote License-to-go Clients
Remote License-to-go client were missing toolbar sets other
than the "Classic" one. Those sets have been restored.
II. KURZWEIL 3000 VERSION 11 RELEASE NOTES
INSTALLATION NOTES
IMPORTANT: Before installing Kurzweil 3000 Version 11,
read the installation instructions in the Kurzweil 3000
for Windows Standalone or Network Installation and Administration
Guide.
When installing or uninstalling on computers with Windows 2000,
Windows XP, or Windows Vista, you must be logged on as administrator
or as a user with administrator privileges.
Installing a Trial version is no different from installing a
live version. If you have already installed a Version 11 trial
version, and have purchased the full Version 11 product, then it
is not necessary to reinstall. All you need to do is to activate
the software and install the additional speech engines.
Whenever installing a combination of Kurzweil 3000 and Kurzweil 1000
(reading system for the blind), always install the older version
first, based on the date on the CD.
Windows 95, Windows 98, WIndows ME, and Windows NT are no longer
officially supported for Kurzweil 3000.
See also the Mozilla Firefox, Internet Explorer and Adobe Acrobat
headings below.
It is recommended that you uninstall the network engine from the
menu shortcut instead of from the Add/Remove Programs Control Panel.
Using the control panel may give you an error message if you cancel
the uninstall. This message is harmless but may be confusing.
TECHNICAL NOTES
- How To Videos
Some of the How To Videos are based on Version 10 user interface.
The basic functionality presented has not changed.
- Knowledge Base
Lots of useful technical information is available in the
Kurzweil Educational Systems Knowledge Base at: http://kurzweiledu.com/support_knowledgebase.asp?page=products
- Opening Documents from Earlier Versions of Kurzweil 3000
When using Thumbnail View, opening KES documents from Version 6
or earlier, especially long ones, takes longer, since those
thumbnails are recomputed in this version. Once they have been
opened, you should re-save the document to prevent the delay
on subsequent loads.
Opening Documents with Earlier Versions of Kurzweil 3000
If you create a color file in Kurzweil 3000 Version 7 or later,
it will display as black and white if it is opened with Version 6
or earlier.
If you create a color file in Kurzweil 3000 Version 8 or 9, and
then open it in Version 7 or earlier, it opens and the text is there,
but no images are displayed. A patch is available for Version 7 to
fix this. Use the Online-->Updates command to get the patch.
You can also download it at www.kurzweiledu.com. The patch will not
help users using a version prior to Version 7.
- Mozilla Firefox
The Mozilla Firefox browser is recommended over Internet Explorer.
Internet Explorer 7, in particular, is poorly supported in
Kurzweil 3000's Read The Web feature, and that feature does not
work at all with Internet Explorer under Vista unless you are
running as an administrator. Since Firefox will be updated frequently,
we recommend downloading the latest version from http://www.mozilla.com. Updated versions of the KESIReader extension will be made available when new versions of Firefox are released that require an update. New versions will be available via the Kurzweil 3000 Online Update command, or you can get them from www.kurzweiledu.com.
See the Kurzweil 3000 for Windows Installation and Administration
Guide or online Help topics for information on installing the
KESIReader extension and selecting the default browser.
When a new version of Firefox is installed, use the
Firefox Tools-->Extensions (or Tools-->AddOns) command to uninstall
any existing copy of KESIReader. Kurzweil 3000 will later prompt
for a reinstall of KESIReader.
When reading complicated pages with Firefox, or using a less powerful
computer, the following message can occur: "A script on this page may
be busy, or it may have stopped responding. You can stop the script
now, or you can continue to see if the script will complete."
You can avoid this message by changing a Firefox variable.
In Firefox, enter "about:config" as a URL (web address).
Navigate to the line that reads: dom.max_script_run_time
The default value is 5 seconds. Try using a larger value.
- Internet Explorer
The Read the Web feature uses Internet Explorer 5.0 through 6.0.
The Tab feature of Internet Explorer 7 is not supported. Under
Vista, Read The Web for Internet Explorer works only if you are
running as an administrator. In general, we strongly encourage
you to use the Mozilla Firefox browser instead (see above).
- Conserving Memory
Windows uses your hard disk as a secondary source of memory
called virtual memory. Memory intensive programs such as
Kurzweil 3000 will not work reliably unless there is enough
free disk space. As a rule of thumb, you should have at least
double your installed memory capacity free on disk. If, for example,
you have 64 megabytes of memory, you should reserve at least
128 megabytes of disk space for virtual memory.
- KESI Virtual Printer
Kurzweil 3000 uses a file called CvtToTiff.dat, which is created in
the same folder as your settings files, to help determine what
files the Virtual Printer can open. By default, this file contains
a list of image format extensions, and PDF. Lines beginning with
semicolons are comments.
You can add more image format extensions to the CvtToTiff.dat file.
However, you must have an application on your system that controls
the printing of files with the extension you add.
- Adobe Acrobat
Prior to Version 9, Kurzweil 3000 used Adobe Acrobat and the KESI
Virtual Printer to open PDF files. Version 9 and later can open PDF
files directly, OR you can open a PDF file with Acrobat and use the
Virtual Printer. You can download Acrobat Reader by going to
http://www.adobe.com/products/acrobat/readstep2.html.
The images extracted from PDF files when they are opened directly
may be at resolutions other than the Kurzweil 3000 default of
300 DPI. If they are at a very high resolution, these images
may slow down recognition and display, and can even cause
Kurzweil 3000 on low memory systems. In these circumstances,
use of the Virtual Printer may be preferred. In general, though,
recognition is faster and more accurate when a PDF file is directly
opened. You may find that the ScanSoft recognition engine is better
for direct access to PDF files than the FineReader engine. See the S
canning pane under Tools->Options to change recognition engines.
- Audio Spooling
If AudioSpooler was working when you Shut Down/Reboot, you must
manually run AudioSpooler.exe to continue converting after the
reboot. You can add a shortcut to AudioSpooler.exe in your Startup
folder if desired. It will exit when finished or if no conversion
work is found.
The Kurzweil 3000 installation process creates two folders for
audio files (Pending Audio and Output Audio) in Documents and
Settings\All Users\Application Data\KESI. Limited Users on at
least some version of Windows (Windows 2000, for example) do not
have the ability to write to this folder by default. This means
that in order to use the Create MP3 feature, a Client must be
logged on to Windows as a Power User or higher, or they must be
given write access to the "KESI" folder listed above.
Music Match 8 (as of January 2004) will not play .WAV files
created by AudioSpooler.
Creating very long audio files using the RealSpeak voices
Jennifer or Jane may fail. Use another non-RealSpeak voice,
or create multiple smaller audio files if this happens.
The AT&T Natural Voices (i.e. English - Crystal or Mike)
are not recommended as the Reading Voice in Create Audio File,
for either MP3 or WAV format. This Engine has problems with
processing reading in the background, which can cause abnormal
program termination in the Audio Spooler.
- License-to-Go
License-to-Go saves a file to the "All Users\Application Data"
folder so that it is accessible to anyone who uses the machine.
The actual location of this folder can vary, but it's typically
something like:
C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\
Limited Users on at least some version of Windows (Windows 2000,
for example) do not have the ability to write to this folder
by default. This means that in order to use the License-to-Go
feature, a Client must be logged on to Windows as a Power User
or higher, or they must be given write access to the "KESI"
subfolder of the folder listed above.
In order to use License-to-Go, you must also give full access
to the following registry key and all its descendants:
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\KESI]
- Online Feature
"Popup killers" such as AdSubtract may interfere with the
Search for Books command and other Kurzweil 3000 Online commands,
and may need to be disabled when Online commands are used.
- Kurzweil 3000 Automater
If you have a high speed scanner, it is often more efficient to
use that scanner's software rather than to use the Kurzweil 3000.
Having done so, you will end up with a number of TIFF files.
Kurzweil 3000 Automater is designed to simplify the process of
converting those files to KES files. It can also convert PDF files.
Look in the Extras folder on your Kurzweil 3000 CD for the program
and brief documentation.
Complete details are also available in Kurzweil 3000 online Help.
- Other Known Issues
If you run the Kurzweil 3000 executable from the Command Promptor
from a batch file, you should add
"Kurzweil Educational Systems\Common Files" to the PATH
environment variable.
If you uninstall the full version of NeoSpeech, make sure that
the 128MB version is also uninstalled (using the Modify option)
or else errors may occur.
If you notice highlighting lagging behind reading, turning off
hardware acceleration will often solve the problem. It may also
help to update your video drivers.
Phonetic spelling support in Word Prediction is available in
English only.
Kurzweil 3000 ships with Homophone and Confusable word lists
for English only.
Some recent HP printers have problems printing colored highlighting
on scanned documents. Check with Kurzweil Educational Systems
technical support if you encounter this issue.Saving a file to
TIF format only saves the currently visible page of a multi-page
document.
PCX image files are no longer supported.
When reading the Web with Internet Explorer, minor display problems
can occur if another application is opened in front of Internet
Explorer.
Use of the Page selection controls at the top of the window
is not recommended during recognition. That is, you should not
manually change pages during recognition. However, you can use
the Read command during recognition. If the system automatically
reads onto successive pages, no problems will arise.
If you are using an HP 5P scanner, you should turn off the Scan
button on the scanner. If this feature is enabled, reading the web
after scanning will cause the system to hang, at least as of HP
Scanning Software version 3.0. Other problems with the Scan button
have been observed.
If you turn off the computer without exiting Kurzweil 3000, or
if Kurzweil 3000 terminates improperly, temporary files with names
like KES***.tmp, ~df123.tmp and KES5173.cpc (the numbers will differ)
may accumulate in your temporary file folder, which is usually
Documents and Settings\username\Local Settings\Temp (or WINDOWS\TEMP
in Windows 98 etc.). Some of these temporary files can be quite large
and take up significant disk space. After making sure that all
applications have been closed, you may safely delete these files.
The RemoveTempFiles program in the Utilities folder on the
installation CD can be used to automatically clean up these files.
Some scanners will not work for restricted or limited users on
Windows 2000 or Windows XP.
As a general rule always turn on the scanner power before turning
on the PC power.
Once a page has been scanned, you should exit the Kurzweil 3000
before trying to switch to another scanner with the Select
Scanner command. Due to bugs in scanner drivers, the safest
procedure is to Select Scanner in Kurzweil 3000, exit
Kurzweil 3000, and start Kurzweil 3000 again.
When using the Clipboard Reader feature under Windows 2000 or
Windows XP, an Administrator account must be used.
When using the display adapter STB System - STB Velocity 128
3D AGP (NVIDIA Riva 128 Software Version 4.0), Kurzweil 3000
can crash when using the Page Thumbnail command. Changing Hardware
Acceleration settings may help.
When Exporting a Text Document to MS RTF (WinWord 7) format,
be sure to include the RTF file extension (.RTF). A "File Conversion
Failed" warning dialog box may appear but the exported file will
be complete. (Simply saving the file as .RTF is preferred.)
- Miscellaneous Notes
While Kurzweil 3000 is running, it may suppress some sounds
from Sound Scheme, since they interfere with speech output.
These sounds will function correctly after you exit from
Kurzweil 3000.
The Undo function on the Edit menu does not undo all user actions.
For example, italic/bold font settings cannot be undone.
Two special settings have been added to Kurzweil 3000 so that
Enable Editing can be turned on by default when an existing
file is opened. The first is a registry key that controls the
default state of Enable Editing for new users as they are
added to Kurzweil 3000. The key is located at:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\KESI\Kurzweil 3000\User
"DefaultEnableEditingDefault" = "True" or "False"
If the value of this key is True, then Enable Editing is on
by default for each new user added. If the value of this key is
False, then Enable Editing is off by default for new users.
The default value for this key is True.
The second is a setting in each user’s settings file which
overrides the key above. This setting is named
"EnableEditingDefault". If the value of this setting is True,
then Enable Editing is on by default. If the value of this
setting is False, then Enable Editing is off by default.
The default value for this setting depends on the value of
the DefaultEnableEditingDefault key, explained above. If you
have not modified either of these settings, then Enable Editing
is turned on by default when each user opens a file.
On Vista, if the NeoSpeech installation is done directly
from the MSI file, the installation may fail with the message:
"vtengsapi50.dll failed to register"
You may find it necessary to run the MSI as administrator.

Kurzweil 3000 for Windows Version 11 Patch 11.04
December 22, 2009
Patch 11.04 for Kurzweil 3000 Version 11 is now available. Installing this
patch will also include updates from prior patches and slipstreams. Depending
on your firewall settings, you may be able to download it by using the Online
-> Update menu item in Kurzweil 3000, provided that you are running version
11 of that product. If that is not possible, you can get it directly from our
FTP site by using the following URL:
ftp://ftp.kurzweiledu.com/pub/kurzweil3000/version110/patches/k3000patch11.04.exe
If you use Online -> Update, you'll be able to install the patch by simply
exiting from Kurzweil 3000. If you don't, just run the above executable once
you have exited from Kurzweil 3000. As always, you'll need administrative
access rights to install this patch. Please note that this patch is useful only
if you have version 11 - it will not update previous versions of Kurzweil 3000.
What follows are release notes for this patch.
December 22nd, 2009.
This is the second patch for version 11 of the Kurzweil 3000. It should only be
installed on a system that contains version 11, 11.01, 11.02, or 11.03. (11.01
was available in a patch, while 11.02 and 11.03 are slipstream releases,
sometimes shipped on CDs). Administrative privileges will be required, and
Kurzweil 3000 should not be running when this patch is run. Typically, the
patch is downloaded from within Kurzweil 3000, and automatically run when one
exits from the product. As an alternative, it can be downloaded from our web
site (http://www.kurzweiledu.com).
Note that this is a cumulative patch, and includes all of the changes that were
introduced by Patch 11.01, as well as a number of new ones.
Changes introduced by Patch 11.04 for Kurzweil 3000.
-
A Menu Item for Split Screen View.
There is now a menu item for Split Screen view in the writing menu.
-
Apostrophes and the Zone Editor.
Apostrophes were being stripped out when entered using OCR override in the Zone
Editor. This has been fixed.
-
Keyboard Shortcut for Quick Takes in the Brainstormer.
The assigned keyboard shortcut for Quick Takes in the Brainstormer was
Control+P, which, of course, is the shortcut for printing. We have changed that
shortcut to Control+Shift+Q.
-
Unable to download large books from Bookshare.org.
Sometimes Bookshare.org takes long enough to prepare a book that a time out is
triggered. We have increased the time out significantly to reduce this problem.
-
Pausing at Empty Notes.
In some circumstances, the feature to pause reading at empty notes was failing
to pause. This has been fixed.
-
Extracting Many Types of Notes.
If you attempted to extract bubble notes along with either text or sticky
notes, the latter two would not necessarily be extracted properly. This has
been fixed.
-
Page Corruption.
Certain rare cases where a page could become unreadable after the insertion of
a note have been fixed.
-
Saving a File in Word 2007 DOCX format.
If you saved a document as docx, you would not be able to open it in MS Word
2007, unless you renamed the extension to .doc. This has been fixed.
-
Collation of Double Sided Scans.
If you attempted to collate a double sided scan, Kurzweil 3000 would crash.
This has been fixed.
-
Color PDF Files.
Attempts to recognize certain Color PDF files using File Open, or the
K3Automater, would cause a crash. The work around was to use the Virtual
Printer instead. For the most part, these problems occur when the resolution of
the color images in the PDF file are high - 600 DPI or above. The problem was,
unfortunately, difficult to reproduce consistently. We have identified and
fixed at least a few of the causes of this crash.
-
Changing Feature Locks in a Network Client.
If you locked certain features from the network administrator, the client could
unlock some of them. This has been fixed.
-
Highlighting in an RTF Document.
If you highlighted an RTF document in Kurzweil 3000 using several different
colors, and then read the document, highlighting colors would change
inappropriately. This has been fixed.
-
The Ruler and Split View.
When "Show Ruler" is checked, and when we are in a split view, part of the
ruler could be seen behind the vertical separator. This has been fixed.
-
Copy Protected KES Files and Text Notes.
If you opened a copy protected KES file in Kurzweil 3000, it was impossible to
type the letter 'x' in any text note, sticky note, or underlying text. This has
been fixed.
-
Display Error for Bubble Note Editing.
If an attempt was made to edit an existing bubble note, and if that bubble note
was a True/False or a Multiple Choice note, the initial display would not show
the last choice. This has been fixed.
-
Following Hyperlinks in Encyclopedia Articles.
In some circumstances, following hyperlinks from one article to another in an
online encyclopedia could cause a crash. This has been fixed.
-
Looking Up Information in "Bartlett's, Columbia, Simpson's, and Respecfully
Quoted Quotations".
If a search string was not found, searching through the above site in the
Online Reference Lookup tool would generate a rather technical message in a
message box. That message box has been suppressed.
-
File->Save did not work for PDF files.
If you opened a PDF file within Kurzweil 3000 and, after recognition
completed, tried to use File->Save, you would be told that there was an error
saving therequested item. File->Save As, however, did work. Now File->Save
will work in the same manner asFile->Save As for a PDF document.
-
Moving to the Previous Word in Edit Underlying Text.
F9 can be used to move backwards word by word, and F10 forwards, when you are
using Edit Underling Text. F9, however, would not cross a paragraph boundary,
while F10 would. F9 can now cross from one paragraph to another.
-
Moving to the Next Word in Edit Underlying Text.
F10 can be used to move forwards in Edit Underlying Text. However, it would
skip over single character words. This has been fixed.
-
Secondary Text Zones and Self Paced Reading.
If a document had multiple secondary text zones, they were read one after
another, even when the reading mode was set to "Self-Paced". This has been
fixed.
-
Stopping at a Secondary Text Zone.
In some circumstances, continuous reading did not stop properly at the end of
the last primary text zone, but would continue into the first secondary text
zone. This has been fixed.
-
Keyboard Navigation in the Spelling or Syllables Dialog.
Tab and Shift Tab did not work properly in these dialogs to move from one
control to another. This has been fixed.
-
Editing Operatings within the Pronunciation Key Control.
In the Syllables Dialog, it was possible to edit the text displayed in the
pronunciation key, although it was impossible to save it. That text is read
only, and editing should not have been permitted. This has been fixed.
-
Bubble Note font size is inconsistent.
If you chose the large size in the appearance section of the bubble notes
dialog, the multiple choice or true/false region of the resulting note would be
larger, but the title and question would be in the normal font size. Now all
regions of the bubble note are written with a larger font.
-
Zoom and DAISY documents.
The Zoom field did not work properly for DAISY documents. This has been fixed.
-
Footnotes overwriting each other.
In some circumstances, adding a new footnote in a document that already
contained footnotes would overwrite the content of one of the existing
footnotes. This has been fixed.
-
Extracting Highlights to Column Notes.
Extracting Highlights to Column Notes did not always produce reliable results,
and could sometimes hang. This was particularly the case with multipage text
documents, such as those produced when one opens a Kurzweil 1000 document or a
DAISY document. This has been fixed.
-
K3Automater.
On some systems, K3Automater would hang. This has been fixed.
Changes introduced by Patch 11.01 for Kurzweil 3000.
- Hyperlinks in Bubble Notes.
If you create or modify a bubble note, you'll find a new check box labeled
"hyperlink" in the upper right corner of the bubble note dialog. If you check
this box and enter a URL in the text box that normally contains the one line
title or prompt for the bubble note, you will have created a new type of bubble
note which allows a reader to bring up a web browser that shows the web page
referenced by the URL - just double click on the bubble note. This type of
bubble note shows a red at sign ("@") in image documents. These kind of bubble
notes are ignored when one extracts notes.
- Creation of Audio Files.
Kurzweil 3000 has always relied on the presence of an MP3 encoder in order to
create audio files in that format. It now can provide one, for those whose
computers do not already have one. This feature is available when you click OK
on the Create MP3 Dialog and the system could not find a MP3 encoder. Note that
you must have Internet access in order to successfully activate this feature.
Alternatively, you can use the "Get MP3 Encoder" button in the bottom left
corner of the Create Audio File dialog. It is enabled only if an MP3 encoder
cannot be found. In rare circumstances, it might be necessary to get the
encoder even when the system determines that you already have an MP3 encoder.
In this case, you'll find a new diagnostic called "MP3Encoder.exe" which will
permit you to get the MP3 Encoder even when Kurzweil 3000 determines that you
already have one.
- Enhanced Support for DAISY Documents.
The bookmarks in DAISY documents have levels, where each level indicates a
particular position in the hierarchy of a document. One level, for example, can
be used for Chapters, and a second for subchapters. When a DAISY document is
opened, the levels of the bookmarks are now shown in the bookmark dialog.
Further, if a DAISY document contained images, those images will be shown when
the document is opened.
- Edit Bubble Note Toolbar Button.
The toolbar button for editing bubble notes did not work. It does now.
- Spell Checking a Document.
When the interactive spell checker was first invoked, it would ignore the first
letter of the first word, often incorrectly indicating a misspelling. This has
been fixed.
- Printing Images.
We found two separate ways in which the printing of an image document could
crash. Both have been fixed.
- Word Lists.
Word lists can now contain phrases as well as single words.
- Extraction of Highlights.
When highlights are extracted into a text document, the color of the
highlighted word was sometimes inappropriately continued into additional
extracted text. This has been fixed.
- Edit Underlying Text.
A problem was found where a recognition result, corrected in edit underlying
text, would be read in the wrong order. This has been fixed.
- Missing Help.
Several context specific help entries were missing. This has been fixed.
- Lock Features Dialog.
Many of the options in the Lock Features dialog were disabled for restricted
users. This was no longer appropriate for version 11 due to changes made for
Vista. Those features are now available, even for restricted users.
- Highlighting while Reading.
If the reading voice was not the same as the voice being used to speak menus
and buttons, highlighting of text as it is being read could be thrown off by
the use of the other voice. This has been fixed.
- File Join
The Join feature was not working when two KES files were specified. This has
been fixed.
- Move Existing Page.
The Move Existing Page dialog did not work. It has been fixed.
- Repetitive Dialog when Scanning Two Sided Pages.
The dialog that indicates that you should turn over your document to continue
scanning could pop up repeatedly. This has been fixed.
- Deletion of a Pronunciation.
Deletion of a pronunciation change would, in some circumstances, cause a crash
in the pronunciation dialog. This has been fixed.
- Disappearing Palettes.
The Brainstorm and Outliner palettes can be moved around the screen, and, in
some circumstances, off the screen. We now limit the movement so that a piece
of the palette will always be visible.
- Cancelling fromFile->Exit.
If a file has not been saved when one chooses to exit from the product, a
dialog box provides an opportunity to cancel the operation. Unfortunately, the
cursor stayed as an hourglass after the cancellation. That has been fixed.
- How To Videos.
The "How To Videos" menu item had been removed from the help menu for network
clients in version 11, as those videos no longer fit on the product CD. They
are, however, available on the web, and the menu item has been returned - it
now brings up a web browser pointing to the appropriate page on the web.
- Toolbar Settings and Remote License-to-go Clients.
Remote License-to-go client were missing toolbar sets other than the "Classic"
one. Those sets have been restored.
Kurzweil 3000 for Windows Version 11 Release 11.03
December 31, 2009
Release 11.03 for Kurzweil 3000 Version 11 (date-wise, out of sequence with
v11.04) removes third party code formerly licensed by Kurzweil but no longer
needed in Kurzweil 3000. There is no need to download anything for this
release; it is a “slipstream” only shipped on CD to new customers.
Kurzweil 3000 for Windows Version 11 Patch 11.02
Patch 11.02 is simply a renaming of Patch 11.01 for consistency reasons. If you
have already downloaded Patch 11.01 below, or Patch 11.04 above, no further
action is required.
Kurzweil 3000 for Windows Version 11 Patch 11.01
January 27, 2009
The first patch for Kurzweil 3000 Version 11 is now available. Depending on
your firewall settings, you may be able to download it by using
theOnline->Update menu item in Kurzweil 3000, provided that you are running
version 11 of that product. If that is not possible, you can get it directly
from our FTP site by using the following URL:
ftp://ftp.kurzweiledu.com/pub/kurzweil3000/version110/patches/k3000patch11.01.exe
If you use Online->Update, you'll be able to install the patch by simply
exiting from Kurzweil 3000. If you don't, just run the above executable once
you have exited from Kurzweil 3000. As always, you'll need administrative
access rights to install this patch. Please note that this patch is useful only
if you have version 11 - it will not update previous releases of Kurzweil 3000.
What follows are release notes for this patch.
January 27th, 2009.
This is the first patch for version 11 of the Kurzweil 3000. It should only be
installed on a system that contains version 11. Administrative privileges will
be required, and Kurzweil 3000 should not be running when this patch is run.
Typically, the patch is downloaded from within Kurzweil 3000, and automatically
run when one exits from the product.
